A domain name is what most people called
a dot com name (it also comes in dot net and dot org,
and other form like .ca, .tv, .com.hk; depend on the country
you register the name) When you sign up with a hosting
service, you'll be assigned a numerical IP (Internet Protocol)
address (in the form 123.123.0.12). Your domain name (www.wahtevername.com)
translates this number to words, so people remember it
easier.
Why
do I need to register a domain name?
Domain name is unique identity on the
world wide web, with almost every business or organization
has a web site these days, it become essential.
Can
I register a domain name without a web site?
Yes, you can. Most domain registar
offer domain parking service, so you can register the
domain name first and come up with the web site when the
time is right for you.
What
is the difference between a domain name and a web site?
Consider this: you registered a new
business let's call it "ABC company", now you
need to find an office for this company. This is the same
with internet. You register a domain name, and you'll
have to find "the office" for this domain name.
This "office" is the web site, and is usually
resides in a computer (the server). Since the internet
has no boundary, this "office" can be anywhere
in the world, and it can be accessed by anyone who have
access to the internet.
Where can I register a domain name?
There are a few places on the Internet
that offer this service. You can go with anyone you like.
Our affiliate partner RegistrationMania
is a good place to start. Please note that they are running
out of domain names for dot com, dot net and dot org (.com
.net .org), a new set of top-level domain names are being
added as we speak. The
.tv Corporation
was one of the most talked-about domain name, but not
really catch on as expected, I guess if your site has
nothing to do with TV, it's not quite appropriated. The
most anticipated domain names right now are: dot info,
dot biz and dot name (.info .biz .name).
What are the procedures for getting
a domain name?
-
First you need to find
a name that is still available. Use the search box below to
do so.
-
If the name that you want is taken, you
can try put additional words or character to it. However,
the only valid characters for a domain name are letters, numbers
and a hyphen "-". Other special characters like
the underscore "_" or an exclamation mark "!"
are NOT permitted.
-
domain names can be up to 63 characters in
length, so it's a lot of combination you can come up with.
The rule of thumb is to get a name that's easy to remember,
the shorter the better.
Once you found a name, follow the instruction,
fill in your info and other necessary details (pick a user name
and password), and the domain name is yours (usually takes about
24 hours for the registration process to be completed).
How long do I own the domain name?
Actually you don't own the domain name, you
only have the right to use it for the time period you registered
it. However, if you maintain the yearly registration fees, you
can continuing use it.
Can I cancel or change
a domain name once registered?
No, you can not change a
domain name once it's registered. If you misspelled the name,
forgot an "s" or something like that, you'll have to
register a new domain name and pay registration fees for the new
name. And once the domain name is registered, there is no refund
even if you decide not to use it. You can discontinue the yearly
registration fee once the term has expired, and the name will
go back to the pool, and other users can register it. Or you can
try to sell it while you still own it.
