What is a domain name?

A domain name is what most people called a dot com name (it also comes in dot net and dot org, and other form like .ca, .tv, .com.hk; depend on the country you register the name) When you sign up with a hosting service, you'll be assigned a numerical IP (Internet Protocol) address (in the form 123.123.0.12). How long do I own the domain name?

Actually you don't own the domain name, you only have the right to use it for the time period you registered it. However, if you maintain the yearly registration fees, you can continuing use it.

Can I cancel or change a domain name once registered?

No, you can not change a domain name once it's registered. If you misspelled the name, forgot an "s" or something like that, you'll have to register a new domain name and pay registration fees for the new name. And once the domain name is registered, there is no refund even if you decide not to use it. You can discontinue the yearly registration fee once the term has expired, and the name will go back to the pool, and other users can register it. Or you can try to sell it while you still own it.
